Rheological measurement of suspensions, pastes, fluids

  • Static yield stress using vane technique
  • Steady shear viscosity using rotational viscometer with cone and plate, vane, cup and bob, parallel plate or in-house designed capillary rheometer
  • Dynamic viscosity measurement
  • Flocculation, settling, compression and permeability evaluation of suspensions for prediction of dewatering response in thickeners, filters and ponds

Dispersion Evaluation

  • Electrokinetic assessment of surface charge and dispersion characteristics of slurries and pastes using electroacoustics and conventional electrophoresis
  • Evaluation of charge state (zeta potential) of planar surfaces using streaming potential
  • Determination of the role of molecular additives in dispersion using electrokinetics
  • Coagulation evaluation and dose level (e.g. cement) evaluation for paste fill materials

Flocculation Evaluation

  • Flocculant performance testing and floc evaluation using controlled shear flocculation, turbidity measurement, free settling rate and hindered settling rate measurement

Particle Size Measurement

  • In-situ slurry evaluation using electroacoustics in the range 30 nm to 30 mm
  • Dispersed particle size evaluation using laser diffraction in the range 0.1 to 3000 mm

Calculation and Interpretation

  • Interpretation of shear stress, shear rate data for a wide range of materials and applications
  • Slurry pipeline prediction from laboratory rheological assessment of slurry properties
  • Prediction of dewatering behaviour for thickening and filtration devices based on laboratory material characterization measurements
  • Overall assessment of the potential for thickened tailings disposal and mine stope fill in the minerals industry

Particulate Fluids Processing Centre

Situated within the Particulate Fluids Processing Centre at the University of Melbourne, RCS has access to leading edge research and technology. Our close association with the Centre allows us to utilise state of the art laboratory facilities and access the latest analytical and predictive tools developed.
